Rulesets Explained: Normal, PvP, Roleplay, and Hardcore

World of Warcraft: Forever organizes its player base around shared rulesets rather than traditional individual realms. Players select their preferred ruleset before creating a character:

  • Normal: Focuses on adventuring and fighting monsters, while allowing players to engage in combat against opposing players at their own discretion.
  • PvP: Focuses on player versus player combat in contested zones, where players are almost always at risk of being attacked. On PvP rulesets, players can only create characters for one faction per account.
  • Roleplay: Enforces strict naming conventions and behavior rules for immersive character roleplaying.
  • Roleplay PvP: Combines roleplaying conventions with open-world player versus player risk.
  • Hardcore: Designed for players seeking high stakes where death is permanent (scheduled to arrive after launch).

Grouping, dungeon runs, and raids take place with players on the same ruleset. Cross-ruleset grouping is not supported. Faction boundaries remain intact, meaning Alliance and Horde characters cannot group together.

Faction Rules on PvP Ecosystems

To support faction balance on PvP rulesets, character creation is restricted to a single faction per account. Once an Alliance character is created on a PvP ruleset, Horde characters cannot be created on that account within the same ruleset, and vice versa. On Normal and Roleplaying rulesets, characters from both factions may be created freely.
